Help / FAQ's - Java2Xpress

  • What is Java2Xpress?
Java2Xpress is a utility that converts code written in the Java language into Xpress. While Java is known as the computer language of choice by all, Xpress is a proprietary xml-based language used within Sun Identify Manager to define and customize the business processes.
Java2Xpress, as the name suggests, converts logic written in Java to Xpress.
  • How do I use the converted code?
The utility allows you to generate Xpress-code that equivalent to the java-code you have -- either individual code-snippets or entire .java files. You may use this method to write business logic in your favorite compact language (unless it is already written -- which is ok too!) and let the tool do the hard work of expressing in Xpress :-)
  • What if I have errors in my Java-code?
Compliance of the input java-code with java-syntax is not required by Java2Xpress. The responsibility to provide syntactically-correct java-code lies with the user and Java2Xpress only works hard to wade through erroneous code. Users are advised to confirm the resulting Xpress code to ensure that the correct business logic is deployed in an Identity system.
  • What are the supported features and restrictions?
While the correspondence between the two languages seems straight-forward, they are not entirely comparable inherently. While Java2Xpress performs well in terms of speed and accuracy, there is no guarantee that the generated code is semantically equivalent at all times. Please see the supported features and restrictions here.
  • Why should I use this tool?
While the xml-based Xpress language is not so difficult to learn and work with, there could be reasons why using this utility would be helpful. For example, developers transitioning from working with Java to Sun IDM might be more comfortable starting off with a tool that shows them the equivalence of the code. On a larger scale, projects transitioning from a java-based implementation to managing identities with Sun IDM might be able to use this tool to ease the effort.
  • I work on a government project and cannot post my source-code outside my domain. Can I use the converter offline?
No problem! In addition to the conversion utility available online, we have a downloadable version for you too! Check out the page here. You may download and use it offline for free. Please note however, this is an executable for MS Windows OS only.
